Faculty Positions

The Pittsburgh Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) is recruiting faculty in biomedical informatics with expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) for tenure-track and tenured positions in the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. DBMI has 18 primary faculty members with a focus on developing and applying AI/ML methods in clinical informatics, translational bioinformatics, clinical research informatics and public health informatics. The University of Pittsburgh and its regional collaborator, Carnegie Mellon University, have dozens of additional faculty scholars pursuing research in AI/ML and healthcare.

The ideal candidate will be a nationally recognized scholar who is working at the intersection of AI/ML and biomedical informatics with one or more existing federally funded research projects. Candidates must either have either a PhD—which may include (but is not limited to) biomedical informatics, health informatics, bioinformatics, computer science, statistics or information sciences—or a professional health degree (MD, RN, PharmD) with informatics training. We welcome clinicians, including internists, pediatricians, surgeons, psychiatrists, nurses, and pharmacists, particularly those with an AI/ML research track record and interest in clinical informatics, precision medicine, or public health informatics.

Successful faculty recruits will be expected to lead an independently funded research program, leverage DBMI’s exceptional infrastructure, and participate in instruction and mentoring in our National Library of Medicine-funded Biomedical Informatics Training Program. Clinically trained faculty can pursue clinical practice and participate in the Clinical Informatics Fellowship program. Faculty also have ample opportunities to explore commercialization and entrepreneurship toward the goal of commercializing innovative research.

For an assistant professor position, the qualifications are as follows: must possess a doctoral degree or appropriate professional degree; should have demonstrated teaching ability, experience in advanced study and research, or professional experience that would enable them to make an academic contribution; should exhibit promise of originality and excellence in some field of scholarship; and should have demonstrated ability in guiding and counseling students.

For an associate professor position, the qualifications are as follows: five or more years of experience, and in addition to the degree requirements described above, an associate professor should have substantial experience in teaching and research and should have attained eminence in a scholarly or professional field.

For a professor position, the qualifications are as follows: 10 or more years of experience, and in addition to the degree requirements described above, a professor should have authoritative knowledge and reputation in a recognized field of learning and the achievement of effective teaching skills; they should have attained superior stature in their field through research, scholarship, and professional leadership.

Postdoctoral Positions

The Biomedical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence Training Program is recruiting postdoctoral research scholars in biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence. Research areas represented by our faculty include:

  • Developing, implementing and evaluating an integrated set of tools that support causal modeling and discovery of biomedical knowledge from very large and complex biomedical data
  • Addressing gaps in clinically useful evidence on drug-drug interactions
  • Algorithms for predicting hospital readmission
  • Cancer deep phenotype extraction from electronic health records
  • Deciphering cellular signaling systems by deep mining a comprehensive genomic compendium
  • Development and evaluation of a learning electronic health record system
  • Modeling of infectious disease study information

Requirements

  • Postgraduate degree (MD or PhD) and training in biomedical informatics, computer science, biostatistics, artificial intelligence, or related discipline
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Ability to independently perform research in one of the above areas of biomedical informatics with mentoring from a faculty member
  • Ability to write and publish scientific articles
