Funding
Our Biomedical Informatics Training Program has been supported by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) through a T15 institutional training grant since 1987. This grant currently supports 13 predoctoral and postdoctoral students. Additional support comes from the Office of the Dean of the School of Medicine, who funds three first-year doctoral students annually, and from faculty research grants.
Doctoral students are typically supported through one of several mechanisms:
- Predoctoral fellowship: funded by the NLM T15 training grant (U.S. citizens and permanent residents only)
- Graduate student researcher: funded by faculty research grants
- Graduate student assistant: funded by institutional funds
- First-year funding: provided by the Office of the Dean of the School of Medicine
Postdoctoral fellows are typically supported through one of two options:
- Postdoctoral fellowship: funded by the NLM T15 training grant (U.S. citizens and permanent residents only). Initial funding is for one year; funding is renewable for up to two additional years for fellows making satisfactory progress.
- Postdoctoral researcher: funded by faculty research grants
MS and Certificate Students
Funding is not provided for MS and certificate students. Some students are supported as graduate student researchers; some receive tuition remission through University of Pittsburgh employment; and many students are self-funded.
