Biography

Shyam Visweswaran, MD, PhD, is Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and currently serves as Interim Chair and Vice Chair of Clinical Informatics in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. He also holds secondary appointments in the Intelligent Systems Program and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Dr. Visweswaran received his medical degree from JIPMER in India, completed a neurology residency at Boston University Medical Center, and earned his PhD in Intelligent Systems (Artificial Intelligence) from the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on developing and evaluating AI methods for biomedical discovery and clinical care, with emphasis on clinical decision support, patient-specific modeling, and research data infrastructure.

Computational & Clinical Expertise

Dr. Visweswaran’s clinical training is in medicine and neurology, and his clinical informatics work focuses on using electronic health record data, predictive modeling, and AI-enabled decision support to improve clinical care. His expertise includes patient-specific modeling, evaluation of clinical algorithms across diverse populations, and the design of privacy-preserving federated research networks. He leads informatics infrastructure for the CTSA program at Pitt and directs the All of Us Pennsylvania Research Program.

Research Interests

Dr. Visweswaran’s research focuses on developing and evaluating artificial intelligence methods for biomedical discovery and clinical care. His current interests include AI-enabled clinical decision support, generalizability and fairness in clinical algorithms, patient-specific predictive modeling, causal discovery from high-dimensional biomedical data, and research data warehousing. He leads the All of Us Pennsylvania Research Program and the ENACT federated network, which enable large-scale observational research across multiple health systems.
