Biography
Dr. Liron Pantanowitz is the Maud L. Menten Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, with a secondary appointment in Biomedical Informatics. A pioneer in pathology informatics for over two decades, he co-founded the Journal of Pathology Informatics, has published over 600 peer-reviewed papers, authored 17 textbooks and 126 book chapters, and holds 4 patents. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Pathology Informatics (2019) and was named a 2024 Pathologist Power List Idol of Innovation.
Research Interests
Dr. Pantanowitz’s research focuses on digital pathology, computational pathology, and AI applied to anatomical pathology diagnosis, grading, and classification. He has led major efforts in whole slide imaging validation, telepathology, quantitative image analysis, and ML for cancer diagnostics, spanning academic research and industry collaboration with 2 spinoff companies and 4 patents.
