Biography
Dr. Andrew J. King is a biomedical informatician specializing in clinical informatics, natural language processing, and AI-driven tools for the intensive care unit. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2018 and completed postdoctoral training in critical care informatics. Dr. King held appointments as Assistant Professor of Critical Care Medicine (2022–2026) and Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics (2025–2026) at the University of Pittsburgh before joining the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in 2026 as Director of Precision Education Technology. He is a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA).
Research Interests
Dr. King’s research focuses on developing and evaluating data-driven tools to improve clinical care and clinician performance in the intensive care unit. His work spans the design of learning electronic medical record systems, use of eye-tracking and machine learning to prioritize relevant patient data, NLP-powered case reporting for adaptive platform trials, voice-based digital assistants for evidence-based ICU practice, and ambient listening systems for AI-driven educational feedback. He is also engaged in interoperability research using FHIR standards and in improving ICU team communication through computational analysis of rounding discussions.
