Biography
Dr. Vanathi Gopalakrishnan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh, with secondary appointments in Bioengineering and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. She also serves as the Founding Director of the VIHAR Center in the School of Medicine. Her background is in computer science, artificial intelligence, and biomedical informatics, and her research focuses on intelligent methods for biomedical data mining, biomarker discovery, precision medicine, and women’s health analytics. She develops knowledge-guided and explainable machine learning approaches for clinically relevant biological and translational problems.
Computational & Clinical Expertise
Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s informatics expertise includes developing computational methods for clinically relevant biomedical problems, including biomarker discovery, disease modeling, and explainable prediction. Her work integrates molecular, imaging, and clinical data to support translational research and precision medicine applications.
Research Interests
Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s research centers on developing intelligent and knowledge-guided methods for predictive and integrative modeling of biomedical data. Her work spans molecular profiling, radiologic imaging, clinical text, and multi-omics integration, with applications in biomarker discovery, disease modeling, precision medicine, healthy aging, and women’s integrative health. She is especially interested in Bayesian rule learning, hybrid AI and machine learning, and computational approaches that incorporate prior knowledge from ontologies, literature, and prior rule models. A unifying goal of her work is to build explainable systems that reduce disease burden and support clinically relevant biological discovery.
