Telemedicine in the Nursing Home Setting: From Ideation to Execution
Potentially avoidable hospitalizations of nursing home residents are common and result in increased morbidity, mortality, and excess healthcare expenditures. The lack of access to qualified physicians and nurse practitioners at most nursing homes during night and weekend hours contributes to potentially avoidable hospitalizations. We developed telemedicine technology and a provider network to address the gap in clinical capabilities and associated potentially avoidable hospitalizations. During this presentation we will discuss how we developed the technology-enabled services solution, the benefits of using the solution from the perspective of multiple stakeholders, how we scaled this to a national business, and the opportunities to develop additional solutions in the nursing home and other clinical settings.
