Title: “The SPECIALIST NLP Tools”
Abstract: This talk will cover open source tools and data developed by the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, a division of the National Library of Medicine. The tools covered leverage the SPECIALIST Lexicon, a very large repository of syntactic knowledge on words for both general English and medical terminology. This resource adequately covers word usage within the Medline corpus, and the UMLS Metathesaurus. This talk will cover word and term normalization and manipulation tools (norm and Lexical Variant Generation), followed by document based segmentation tools (The TextTools). The textTools segment documents into sections, sentences, (noun) phrases, terms, and words. The talk will mention the java implementation of Metamap, (MMTx), spelling suggestion tools (GSpell), and will cover some details of the part of speech tagging tool (dTagger) recently developed.

Shameless Plug: In his spare time Guy sings bass for Euphonism, a Washington D.C. based vocal band - Not your father’s barbershop quartet. Euphonism is a group of 20 somethings (except Guy) devoted to Rock and R&B cover tunes. Co- incidentally, Euphonism is appearing with Doubleshot!, a Pittsburgh based award winning awesome vocal band, at the Shadow Lounge, Saturday, July 28.
