Title “The Catalyst Program”
The Catalyst Program of the CTSI will serve as the integrative academic home for clinical and translational scientists across the University's six health sciences schools; Carnegie Mellon University; the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation's largest and most financially successful academic health care systems; and the region and its ability to interact with industry and educating students and faculty to promote the more rapid development of drugs, diagnostics and devices. The CTSI's Catalyst Core will develop, nurture, and support a cadre of clinical and translational scientists ability to effectively integrate their academic activities with the business, financial and legal components necessary for Translational Research by building on the University's existing clinical research training programs to establish a comprehensive program with activities ranging from early research exposure for graduate students to advanced post-doctoral programs. The resulting transformations of the institution, scientist, research, and health practice integrations, with enhanced business, financial, and legal acumen, will improve health locally, regionally, and nationally.
1. To promote training of students and faculty in the health sciences to advance understanding of the role of the partnership between academic health centers and industry in developing novel therapeutics and diagnostics.
The CTSI will engage graduate students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty within each of the health sciences schools and established multidisciplinary Institutes (UPCI, Starzl Transplantation Institute, Molecular Medicine Institute, and the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine) to partner through training grants and novel programs with industry partners to advance their knowledge and understanding of development strategies.
2. To catalyze strategic and proactive engagement with select industry partners in the development of a commercial value chain around our most promising interventional strategies.
The Office of Enterprise Development acts as a resource for health sciences faculty to encourage and facilitate pursuing entrepreneurship and interactions with industry. Funded pilot projects will demonstrate: (1) the ability of University of Pittsburgh scientists and clinicians to conduct research aimed at significantly improved timelines and milestones to promote translational research; and (2) the availability of appropriate resources derived from both the CTSI and its partners.
