Abstract: In this talk, I will provide a brief overview of BioCaster, an ontology driven surveillance system that monitors multi-lingual online news sources for communicable disease outbreaks. Additionally, I will describe recent work on designing a set of disease outbreak report annotation guidelines for news texts, and the construction of an annotated corpus based on those guidelines.
