Abstract: Most faculty-presented colloquiums focus on our research, but much of our time is spent on non-funded, non-research activities. In this talk, I will talk about some of what I have been working on over the past year, including my experiences editing a special issue of a journal, trying to develop consensus definitions for syndromic surveillance, chairing a conference, and getting permission from UPMC to compile a repository of de-identified clinical reports to share with outside researchers. Politics, intrigue, creativity, disappointment, frustration, contentment, and lessons learned – digging below the surface of research in academics.
